A side project: a tool-using agent built from scratch on a local LLM, including a portfolio-analysis tool that reads holdings from Excel.
Context
A personal project to understand how tool-using agents work, without relying on a framework.
Problem
Agent frameworks hide the mechanics of tool calling. Building one from scratch makes them visible.

Personal project; I built it from scratch.
Approach & architecture
- Built a tool-using agent on a local LLM (Ollama + DeepSeek Coder).
- Added a portfolio-analysis tool that reads holdings from Excel.
Results
- A working tool-using agent running entirely on a local model.
